Edge Load and Release Timing

Recommended practice time: 35–50 min

Introduction

Master timely edge engagement, progressive elastic loading and a quiet release to keep speed and precision.

Essence / steps

  1. Early edge & setup
Early edge from the legs; stacked toward the outside ski; eyes down the line.
  2. Elastic load
Let pressure build through mid-turn. Firm shin contact, mass over outside binding, supple joints.
  3. Late apex peak
Allow the pressure peak to occur after the fall line; torso stays quiet.
  4. Silent release & transition
No pop; legs switch edges under a steady torso; quick recenter over the new outside.
Edge timing: early engagement, elastic pressure build to a late apex, then a quiet release and quick recenter.
Sequence: early edge → build → late apex → silent release.

Typical mistakes

  • Loading abruptly at the fall line → chatter/skid.
  • Popping in transition and losing snow contact.
  • Upper-body rotation instead of lower-body work.
  • “Park & ride” — fixed angles with no active change through the arc.

Instructor’s tip

“Wind the spring smoothly and let it unwind by itself. You stay quiet; the skis accelerate.”

Conclusion

Right-time loading and silent release deliver speed and control. Let rhythm lead you into the next edge.
