Equipment Check Before Descent

Recommended practice time: 10–15 min

Introduction

This quick checklist reduces mishaps before committing to steep or complex terrain. The order is simple and verifiable.

Essence / steps

  1. Bindings & boots
Lock buckles and power strap; DIN as planned; toe/heel engagement click and visual height mark confirmed.
  2. Avy kit & pack
Beacon on TRANSMIT; probe and shovel on top; airbag handle clear; IFAK and foil accessible.
  3. Comms & plan
Radio/phone confirmed; regroup point set; spacing and order agreed.
  4. Final details
Goggles clear, straps aligned, zips closed, gloves dry; short team OK.
Pre-descent check: bindings/boots, avalanche kit and pack access, comms and partner plan, final straps/zip/goggles.
Sequence: bindings & boots → avy kit & pack → comms & plan → final details.

Typical mistakes

  • Beacon left on SEARCH or powered off.
  • Airbag handle blocked by gear.
  • No agreed regroup or radio channel.
  • Unsafe DIN or half-latched buckles.

Questions

How often to group-check?

Before every off-piste section—brief function test of all devices and channels.

No radio available?

Set clear visual signals and fixed regroup points before splitting up.

Instructor’s tip

“Check slow—ski fast. A one-minute ritual prevents the costliest mistakes.”

Conclusion

A short, consistent check improves safety and team rhythm. Do not skip any step.
