Off-Piste Technique

Recommended practice time: 45–60 min

Introduction

We aim for a centered mass, soft absorption of bumps and speed control by turn shape while reading terrain and making safe choices.

Essence / steps

  1. Scan terrain & plan line
Read slope, snow types and obstacles. Plan mellow braking arcs and reset spots.
  2. Stance & absorption
Center over the feet; keep ankles/knees supple. Absorb bumps with leg flex, avoid popping.
  3. Turn shape & speed
Close the arc to slow, open to go. Quiet torso, active inside half.
  4. Transition & recentre
Release pressure quietly, stay on the snow and recentre over the new outside ski quickly.
Off-piste technique: centered stance, soft ankles and knees, speed control and terrain reading for safe, fluid turns.
Sequence: scan → absorb → shape → quiet transition.

Typical mistakes

  • Rigid knees—no absorption, chatter and loss of edge control.
  • Opening the arc too soon and losing speed control.
  • Upper-body rotation instead of lower-body steering.
  • Late recentering after transition.

Questions

How do I read snow texture?

Look for wind-packed slabs, crust and soft pockets. Probe with a short test turn before committing.

Should I “pop” between turns?

No—prefer a quiet release and continuous snow contact for stability.

Instructor’s tip

“Keep the knees supple and look two turns ahead. Control speed with shape, not panic braking.”

Conclusion

Center, absorption and thoughtful shape yield safe, flowing off-piste turns. Build intensity gradually.
