Using surface lifts

Recommended practice: 10–15 min

Introduction

Button lifts and T-bars are common surface lifts. Keep weight on the skis, maintain a parallel stance, and exit on time to ride smoothly.

4 steps for safe riding

  1. Prepare and line up
Skis parallel, poles in one hand ahead of you, watch the signs. Keep distance and glide calmly to the start.
  2. Take the carrier
Place the button gently between your legs; rest the T-bar behind the thighs (for two: agree on left/right). Don’t sit — just lean on it.
  3. Ride uphill
Weight on your skis, torso slightly forward, relaxed arms. Follow the track, keep spacing, don’t cross skis. If you fall off, clear the lane and try again.
  4. Exit smoothly
At the exit sign, drift to the side, release the carrier and let it return on its own. Leave the exit zone promptly.
Beginner using surface lift: relaxed stance, skis parallel, hold lightly, release safely at exit.
Parallel skis, relaxed arms and a timely release make the ride stable and safe.

Typical mistakes

  • Sitting on the button/T-bar or pulling with the arms instead of loading the skis.
  • Crossing or edging skis across the track — leads to slipping.
  • Late release at the exit and lingering in the exit lane.

Beginner questions

What if I fall off?

Let the carrier go, move off the track immediately and slide safely to the start or a safe spot. Try again calmly.

How should I hold my poles?

Hold both poles in one hand in front of you with tips pointing down the track, leaving the other hand free for balance.

Can two riders share a T-bar?

Yes — stand shoulder-to-shoulder, agree on sides and keep skis parallel under the T-bar.

Instructor’s tip

“Imagine a gentle elastic pulling you. Breathe, look ahead and let your legs glide — arms only stabilize.”

Conclusion

With simple prep, proper support and a clean exit, button lifts and T-bars become an easy, reliable ride to the top.
