Using Chairlifts Independently

Recommended practice time: 10–15 min

Introduction

With simple timing and clear signals, chairlifts become easy and safe to use solo.

Steps

  1. Prepare in the gate
Straps off wrists; hold poles in one hand; eyes on the incoming chair; wait for the signal.
  2. Sit & lower the bar
Sit smoothly when the chair touches your legs; lower the safety bar together; keep ski tips clear.
  3. Ride calmly
Stay seated, no swinging; read signs; agree on exit side before the ramp.
  4. Raise on signal & unload
Raise the bar only at the sign; stand tall, tips up, glide straight 5–10 m, then move aside.
Board, ride, and unload from a chairlift safely: prepare, sit and lower bar, ride calmly, raise bar on signal, glide straight out.
Flow: prepare → sit & bar down → calm ride → bar up on signal → straight exit.

Typical mistakes

  • Raising the bar too early.
  • Jumping into the chair instead of sitting.
  • Blocking the ramp right after unloading.
  • Swinging with poles or backpacks.

Beginner questions

What if I miss the chair?

Just wait for the next one — no running or ducking fences.

Who operates the safety bar?

Agree as a group — one person announces, everyone confirms; raise only at the sign.

Where do I keep the poles?

In one hand, tips down; don’t wave or poke neighbors.

Instructor’s tip

“Decide early: who calls the bar and which side you exit. Clarity removes stress.”

Conclusion

Consistent sequence and calm pace make chairlifts safe and simple even without assistance.
